What makes an air conditioner efficient

An efficient air conditioner gives you more cooling and heating for every unit of electricity it uses, which means lower running costs and a smaller impact on the environment. Two things make the biggest difference: the technology inside the unit, and how well it is sized and fitted for your room. Get both right and a modern system is remarkably cheap to run. Get them wrong and even a good unit will cost more than it should.

The ratings that matter: SEER and SCOP

Air conditioning efficiency is measured with two seasonal ratings, and both are worth understanding.

  • SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio): measures cooling efficiency across a typical season. It is shown as an energy class from A+ up to A+++, with A+++ being the most efficient. The higher the class, the less electricity the unit uses to keep a room cool.
  • SCOP (Seasonal Coefficient of Performance): measures heating efficiency, because these units heat in winter as well as cool in summer. A heat pump typically produces somewhere between three and five units of heat for every unit of electricity it draws, which is why it is far cheaper to run than a plug-in electric heater.
  • As a simple rule, look for a unit rated A++ or A+++ for cooling, with a strong SCOP for the heating side. That combination is what keeps the running costs down all year.

    Inverter technology: the biggest single factor

    The most important piece of technology is the inverter. An older, non-inverter unit runs its compressor at full power or not at all, switching on and off to hold a temperature, and it wastes energy every time it restarts. An inverter unit varies the compressor speed instead, so once the room reaches temperature it settles down and runs gently rather than cycling on and off. It is the difference between stop-start town driving and a steady run on the motorway.

    Every system we install is inverter-driven as standard. It is no longer a premium option, and it is the main reason a modern unit is so much cheaper to run than one from ten or fifteen years ago.

    Efficient heating, not just cooling

    It is easy to think of air conditioning as a summer purchase, but the same unit heats the room in winter, and it does so efficiently. Because a heat pump moves heat rather than burning fuel to make it, it produces several units of heat for every unit of electricity, where a plug-in electric heater produces one.     Sizing: where efficiency really starts

    The most efficient unit in the world will cost you money if it is the wrong size for the room. An oversized unit cools in short bursts and never settles into its efficient running, while an undersized one runs flat out and struggles on the hottest days. Neither is comfortable and neither is cheap.

    This is why we size every unit on the survey, based on the room dimensions, how much glazing it has and which way it faces, rather than fitting a standard box to every room. Correct sizing is the single biggest thing that turns a good unit into a cheap-to-run one.

    Features that save energy

    Beyond the rating and the sizing, a few features help keep consumption down day to day:

  • Sleep and eco modes: hold a gentle output overnight or cap the power for steady, low-cost running.
  • Timers and scheduling: so the unit only runs when you need it, not all day.
  • App and Wi-Fi control: turn it on and off remotely and keep an eye on how you are using it.
  • Presence sensing: on some models: ease off when a room is empty.
  • DC fan motors: standard on modern inverter units, using less power and running quietly.
  • Getting the most from your system

    However efficient the unit, how you use and look after it makes a real difference:

  • Set sensible temperatures: every degree cooler in summer or warmer in winter uses more energy, so a comfortable 22 to 24 degrees in summer costs a lot less than chasing 18.
  • Clean the filters: clogged filters make the unit work harder for less. A rinse every few weeks in heavy use keeps it efficient. Our maintenance guide covers this.
  • Keep the outdoor unit clear: leaves and debris blocking the airflow force it to work harder.
  • Only run the rooms you use: cooling one room you are in beats cooling the whole house.
  • Have it serviced once a year: a serviced system holds its efficiency and keeps your warranty valid.
